You’re probably wondering how this whole coaching thing works. My methodology is tailored to each client’s unique needs and objectives. With your consent, I will be leveraging methods that target both the body and the mind, more specifically the conscious and unconscious mind. My goal is to arm you with tools and awareness so you can create lasting change from within and move forward with clarity and purpose. It is crucial for you to be in the driver seat when it comes to how we will work together, but there are some common patterns.
Let’s break it down:
I will be asking you a lot of questions, most of them open-ended. Some might feel personal or challenging. I encourage you to engage fully and explore deeply, but let me know at any point if a topic feels off-limits, and we’ll respect that boundary.
Some clients are really just looking for help on how to navigate a specific situation. If this is you, I like to quickly discuss how you like to work and if there’s anything critical that I’d need to know about you (how you identify, trigger words, etc.) before jumping right into the problematic situation and how to address it.
Other clients are looking for support with more complex topics. If this is more your case, I like to take the first couple of sessions to get to know you more, your objectives, your values, your preferred style of working. Then we’ll move on to setting some goals: some will be very measurable, others are likely to be more vague as they will revolve around feeling more of this or that. After that, we’ll start meeting weekly or bi-weekly (most common options though monthly is also available) to begin working towards achieving the goals we set together.
I make a point of celebrating every win, no matter how small. It helps us avoid losing sight of progress when negative thinking threatens to take over.
The process
You may also be asking yourself if coaching and therapy are the same. The short answer is no.
While I deeply respect therapy, these are distinct disciplines. In coaching, we won’t explore your past in depth. We may touch on it just enough to provide context and understand the strategies you’ve already tried. We will focus on who you are today and how to move forward to help you achieve your goals.
If at any point I believe that your needs would be better met by another professional, for example a therapist, I’ll encourage you to seek that support and can often provide a referral. Although coaching and therapy can complement one another, I will always defer to your therapist’s expertise in this area.
